Fort Hope

June 3rd -4th 2024

Vaccination and Wellness Clinic

On June 3rd and 4th, 2024 a small veterinary team supporting Cat Lake Friends of Animush travelled North to Fort Hope. Flying into the remote Northern community of Eabametoong First Nations, a vaccine and wellness clinic was held for the animals. With in these remote Northern communities, veterinary care is limited, which often results in an overpopulation of dogs, with many who are free roaming. With funding provided from Pet Smart Charities, one veterinarian and two RVT’s were able to provide care for 84 pets, including both dogs and cats over 2 days. The animals received wellness exams, parasite prevention and immunizations. A listening circle was conducted during our time in the North, where individuals from the community were able to come and share their thoughts and guidance towards the development of a dog management plan. These shared visions will be put in motion to help develop the future dog management program, with goals to help promote the health and safely for pets and people in these remote First Nation communities. Please stay tuned for more upcoming projects that we have happening in these remote Northern communities!

Round Lake in August 2025

Participating in the remote spay/neuter and wellness clinic in Round Lake was an incredibly meaningful experience. I had the opportunity to work alongside a passionate veterinary team providing essential care to animals in the community, from wellness checks to surgeries. Beyond the hands-on skills I gained, what stood out most was the sense of connection and collaboration within the team as we worked together to make an impact. I was able to help care for so many animals and have fun while doing it. This experience deepened my understanding of accessible veterinary care and highlighted how important and transformative outreach programs like this can be. I encourage anyone with a passion for animal health and community service to get involved—it truly makes a difference.

Cat Lake Friends of Animush

The loss of a community dog adds to the burden of grief. This focus group works closely with the residents and Chief and Council to initiate programs with the hope that these dog culls would not be necessary and community mental health would be enhanced.
